Tired?? Overweight?? Low back pain?? Sit at a desk all day??
Many of us now have jobs that require us to sit for long periods of time staring at a computer screen. Prior to the technology revolution, very few people were required to sit throughout the entire day. With the progression of technology, we as a society have become very lazy. Obesity, diabetes, depression, chronic fatigue and back pain are just a few issues that have skyrocketed in prevalence in the last 10 years. Why is that? Your body by design is not made to remain in a sitting position for long periods of time. By design you should on your feet and moving. Interestingly enough, the human body is very skilled at adapting to what it is given. Naturally if you sit for long periods of time, your body begins to think that sitting is the normal position it is supposed to be in. Just look at your posture. Is your head shifted in front of your shoulders? Do your shoulders roll forward? Do your muscles always feel tight? If so, most likely your body is already adapting to you sitting. Now the other negative aspect of sitting is the level of inactivity. Sedentary lifestyles are a major factor in people experiencing chronic stress symptoms such as obesity, diabetes, and depression. Again, your body is designed to be moving!! If you are not moving, your body is dying because MOTION IS LIFE!! What can you do to change your life? First, you must recognize and understand things do not develop overnight. Second, you must commit to changing your lifestyle. Simple stretches and exercises to correct your posture can make a huge difference. For instance, arm-leg opposition is a great total body exercise that can help your posture, build a strong core, and help your balance.
To perform this exercise:
Begin on all fours, aligning your knees under your hips and your wrists under your shoulders.
Raise your left arm to shoulder height and your left leg to hip height.
Hold for 2 counts, reaching forward with your fingers and back with your heels.
Repeat this exercise on the opposite side.
Do 15 to 20 reps, alternating sides
Another key component to remember is that flexibility is as important as strength. Focus more on stretching your flexor muscle groups such as your hamstrings, calves, and chest because these are the muscle groups shortened when you sit.
